Green Oak is timber that has not been seasoned – it still has a high water content from being the trees’ life blood. I use the timber like this because in the course of steadily drying out in the atmosphere I can create furniture that will warp, contort, twist, perhaps split, ensuring each piece is individual.
Every part of the process is done by hand and has to be, and thought this would be a good testament to hand craftsmanship as this timber would ruin machinery and it simply isn't conveniently flat enough for it.
Furniture made from Green Oak is challenging to work with and needs to be crafted with thought and skill … and then it moves!
There will be no need for maintenance or bringing the work in over the winter months. The tannin in the oak is a natural preservative and my work has been designed to be used, almost abused. To sit with the seasons and to learn to tell tales.
The Rope:
Because I want my work to appear simple and uncomplicated the sophistication is in the detail, often unnoticed but quietly beautiful. I use British crafted rope from the historic naval docks of Chatham which is then whipped and spliced for a very appropriate elegance.
